I’m excited about todays blog post in which I’m partnering with Walmart to shed some light on how we’ve adopted a monthly budget and how we save on household/family items with Walmart. After purchasing our very first home we are aware more then ever how important budgeting is. Between a mortgage, furnishing a house & adding a new member to the family (all within the last few months) we have to be very mindful of our month or month expenses going forward. These 3 small steps are helping us to get our expenses in order.
1. FIND OUT WHAT YOUR SPENDING & ON WHAT. The first thing we did was get a snapshot of what we were spending annually and which categories we spent the most on. no shocker here: food & beverage was our highest spending category. What was most surprising was just seeing the overall number in plain sight on our credit card statement. This was shocking enough and has taught us to think twice about the decisions we make when it comes to going out to eat… for example did we really need to spend $150 on a lunch out when we could wait and plan a nice date night a few times a month?
2. SMALL sacrifices can make a BIG difference Frank is all about this one. He bought a coffee maker and started having his coffee at home a few mornings during the work week. I have yet to kick my Starbucks habit but I’m trying to make up for it in other ways, I’ve chosen to make my lunch on most days instead of going out to grab a sandwich or a salad.
3. SAVE with making bulk monthly purchases (I found myself running to to the local drug store every time we ran out of something or needed a new pack of diapers, wipes etc (definitely overspending) and I was not really being mindful of how much I actually needed each month… not to mention it was a big waste of energy and time. Now we have a reoccurring monthly order on Walmart.com for all of our household & baby items. Walmart has recently become my one stop shop for all things household & baby and this month marks the 20th anniversary of their exclusive baby brand called Parent’s Choice. I was pleasantly surprised to discover their in house baby brand because we all know that baby products: whether it’s an expensive formula, wipes, diapers (or whatever it is) can make a huge dent in our families overall monthly budget… so I love that this brand offers a high quality alternative on certain items without the high price point to match. Saving Tip: shopping in store brands in general is a great way to save on your overall bottom line. Some of my Parent’s Choice Favorites: these fragrance free baby wipes, this step-stool for the bathroom & these organic pouches. p.s. if you’re searching for last minute Halloween costumes for the kids, Walmart has super affordable options with a quick turnaround.
