I finally got around to finishing a book I started over the summer (eek) while Frank & I were on a mini vacay last week! I read Paula Mclain’s latest Novel, “Love & Ruin”. I highly recommend the novel if you share in my obsession with Ernest Hemingway and are also a fan of historical fiction with female protagonists. I was an English major in college and have always been a big reader. Since becoming a mom I haven’t been able to carve out the time to read before bed like I used to. I don’t know if it’s because I associate reading with leisure and relaxation and there hasn’t been a whole lot of that in the Hurley Household over the past 2+ years or maybe it’s because my brain just wants to shut off when it’s time to climb in bed after a busy day of toddler wrangling 😉 but either way I’m excited to be back on the reading kick again! Below I’ve recommended a few of my all-time favorite reads and am also sharing some newbies that I’ve added to my summer reading list. There’s a TOP 10 LIST made up of your suggestions! Scroll down for a full round up!
My genre of choice is historical fiction and I love anything & everything having to do with my literary favorites Hemingway & Fitzgerald. I’ve also become fascinated with the “women behind the men” so to speak. Three of the books I recommend below are novels told from the perspective of the spouses of these literary greats. These interesting & provocative women were often overlooked or overshadowed throughout history but the authors below have found a way to bring these inspiring women to life!
Z: A NOVEL OF ZELDA FITZGERALD, THERESE ANNE FOWLER: A young Zelda meets F. Scott Fitzgergald at a country club dance when she is just 17. After Scott publishes his first novel he and Zelda e are greeted with unimagined success, fame & wealth at the dawn of the jazz age. The world becomes their playground, New York City, Paris, LA etc and it’s a time of excess & indulgence.. This is the story of the scandalous, witty & inspiring Zelda and her life and journey with Fitzgerald during the 1920s.
The Paris Wife- Paula McLain: set place in 1920s Paris. One of my all time favorite novels illuminates the Jazz Age in Paris. This book truly made me fall in love with Paris and motivated me to visit the beautiful city. It tells the love story of Ernest Hemmingway & his first wife Hadley. “Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking and fast-living life of Jazz Age Paris, which hardly values traditional notions of family and monogamy”- BOOKREADS.com A must read for any Paris or Hemingway lover.
Loving Frank- Nancy Horan: surrounds the elicit affair between famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright and mistress Mamah Borthwick Cheney. Nancy Horan mixes fact & fiction to tell their love story and pays tribute to a courageous woman in the midst of public shame. Be prepared for a tear jerker.
MY SUMMER BEACH PICK: OUT EAST: MEMOIR OF A MONTAUK SUMMER, JOHN GLYNN. This book was written by a friend. HOW COOL?! It’s a coming of age story about John finding himself during a summer spent in a Montauk share-house called the “Hive”. This is your ultimate summer beach read filled with all of the drama one could expect in a house shared by 31 people. I can’t wait to read it myself as I have many friends who make cameos throughout the memoir! Pre-order your copy on amazon now!
